The Honjo International Scholarship Foundation offers prestigious scholarships for international students who wish to pursue Master’s or Ph.D. studies in Japan. This scholarship aims to support talented individuals who exhibit a strong dedication to contributing to their home country post-graduation. The scholarship provides substantial financial support and includes participation in conferences and other academic events. This scholarship is available to international students intending to pursue or currently pursuing a master’s or doctoral degree at a Japanese graduate school.  

Applicants can apply overseas if they receive acceptance from a Japanese graduate school. All nationalities and fields of research are encouraged to apply. Candidates have the option to apply directly to the foundation without requiring prior university endorsement. Applicants must not hold Japanese citizenship and must begin their studies in Japan in September or October 2024. Monthly stipends range from ¥160,000 to ¥210,000, depending on the program length, and no IELTS is required. Instead, applicants must have basic proficiency in Japanese.  Scholarship Benefits:  

  • Monthly stipend amounts: 
  • ¥210,000 per month for a 1-2 year degree. 
  • ¥190,000 per month for a 3-year degree. 
  • ¥160,000 per month for a 4-5 year degree. 
  • Travel grants for conference attendance. 
  • Participation in foundation-organized events and networking opportunities with alumni. 

 Eligibility Criteria: 

  • Nationality: Applicants should not possess Japanese citizenship. All international students are eligible to apply. 
  • Degree Programs: Open to Master’s and Ph.D. students starting in September/October 2024.
  • Age Limit:  – Master’s program applicants must be under 30 years. 
  •    – Ph.D. program applicants must be under 35 years.  
  • Language Requirement: Basic knowledge of Japanese is essential as interviews will be conducted in Japanese.

IELTS is not required. 

Commitment to Home Country: Demonstrating a strong dedication to contributing to their home country post-studies in Japan is a crucial aspect of the application.

 Required Documents: 

  1. Research Proposal: A comprehensive outline of your proposed research.
  2. Academic Transcripts: Including records from your undergraduate and graduate studies, if applicable.
  3. Recommendation Letters: At least one letter from a professor or supervisor.
  4. Proof of Admission: An admission or acceptance letter from a Japanese graduate school.
  5. Face Photo: Submit a photo in jpg or gif format, with a maximum size of 500KB.
  6. 2-Minute Video: Create a video detailing your research plan, to be submitted in either Japanese or English, with a maximum size of 1GB.

 Application Process of Honjo International Scholarship

  • Confirm eligibility before starting the application process. 
  • Access the online application system. 
  • Fill out the application form and upload all the required documents. 
  • Submit a 2-minute video explaining your research. 
  • After submission, an application number will be issued, and a PDF of your application form will be generated. 
  • Save the PDF, as you will need it when the results are announced on the official website.

  • January 31, 2025: Announcement of document screening results (application numbers of those moving to the interview stage will be posted on the website) 
  • February 2025: Interview examinations (to be held in Tokyo or conducted via video call for remote applicants)
